This week on Travlin the Tracks I'll be commemorating the 50th anniversary of the year 1971.
Please tune in this Thursday (1/14) to listen to some of my favorite tracks from 1971, and hear how musicians expressed themselves and helped others cope through the tumultuous year of 1971.

1971 was the pinnacle of the golden era of soul message music culminating in one of the premier landmark LPs in the history of soul music, Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. However, the entirety of soul music and all of its offshoots produced mountains of message music during that period. We'll listen to a sampling of them.
Outside of message music, we'll also enjoy a variety of sound trends that were popular in soul at the time: psych soul, folk soul, funky soul, and more. I hope you'll tune in and let me know which song selections you enjoyed the most.
I began utilizing my radio show for these 50th anniversaries of specific years back in 2018 (when I celebrated 1968). At that time, I had no intention of doing it annually. However, as the political issues in this country progressed and began to draw increasing parallels to occurrences of 5 decades ago, it seemed worthwhile to take note of how things have changed, and how much they remain the same, if for no other reason than to remind us that if we don't continue the fight for social & racial justice, we won't experience sustained progress.
